The title of the production I served as the Assistant Director for was Toxic by Kit Wilder, it was performed at City Lights Theater Company in San Jose. This play follows the stories of 11 people and how the mass shooting that took place during their senior year of high school has affected them 5 years later. It is a complex story filled with the gut wrenching reality of how these sorts of tragedies affect the youth. It discusses a wide range of conflicting views, politics, and emotions.
It is a piece that I feel is needed, especially in today’s sociopolitical climate. For this production, my job is to help the director and make their job easier. Responsibilities as an AD vary depending on the director and their style of directing. However, responsibilities include: helping cast the play, giving feedback, helping to block scenes, writing down blocking, taking notes, relaying information to the stage manager, sending out emails, coordinating schedules, etc.
