SCU First Gen Staff/Faculty /Administration Profiles

Lang Chen
Assistant Professor, Psychology and Neuroscience Program
Where did you attend college?

Beijing, China

What was your college experience like as a first-generation college student?

It was very exciting and I was proud of myself. There were lots of challenges since no one in my family would have told me that there were more flexibilities in my life and time in college so time management was a big challenge for me. Also, I worked part-time as a tutor to support myself, living in a big city so balancing yourself academically and financially were also big challenges. However, the opportunity of learning and exposure to new knowledge is irreplaceable experience to me.

What message do you have to share with current first-generation college students?

There are lots of challenges, but it is totally worthy! Also, don't worry too much about grades! Figuring out who you would like to be as a person and a professional is way much more important.
