What was your college experience like as a first-generation college student?
My first year was difficult. Never had I ever had such a low GPA. Learning the pace and academic quality that was needed was a struggle, but I found friends in my residence hall who helped along the way. I felt lost a good portion of my first year and then found ways to get involved during my sophomore year when I became a student leader. These experiences connected me to staff and faculty. Getting involved and finding a sense of purpose made all the difference.
What message do you have to share with current first-generation college students?
There are people here ready to offer support and guidance. Be brave and reach out. Take risks, try new things, meet different people. The experience is truly what you make of it!
