What was your college experience like as a first-generation college student?
My parents were very adamant about the importance of education even though they could not attend college due to The Great Depression. Our house was full of books and encyclopedias (1960’s version of the Internet), so the transition to college was smooth. I wasn’t even aware of the phrase “first generation college student” until many years later.
What message do you have to share with current first-generation college students?
Be flexible and open new ideas about knowledge and education and be patient in expecting big changes to occur rapidly; it’s a process.
