Where did you attend college?

Cal State East Bay

What was your college experience like as a first-generation college student?

It was a culture shock. Being first-generation I refused to take any students loans and go into any debt. So I worked 30+ hours a week while being a full-time student my whole time in college. Plus, being the oldest of my siblings I was another parent figure to them. With all this I wasn't as involved on campus as I would of liked. Plus, not having anyone at home that understood or could help with the assignments made it for a tough uphill climb.

What message do you have to share with current first-generation college students?

Do not let your grades define you. Work to make each day better than the one before it. Stay positive in the daily grind and remember each step forward you take is changing your families future for the better.
