What was your college experience like as a first-generation college student?
Great but pretty hard in that I had little in common with my wealthier peers and I had to work hard to earn enough money to make it all work. There was very little, if any, time for fun, any vacations, or extracurricular activities (other than music ministry in church). However, I'm very grateful for the experience and the opportunity.
What message do you have to share with current first-generation college students?
Take your studies very seriously and work hard to get through, regardless of what your peers may or may not be doing. And education is the best ticket for success for first generation students, in my humble view, as without education my life certainly would have been very different and not so good.
