"A Walk in Nature," by Jessica Eastburn, Lecturer in Studio Art

Jessica Eastburn, Lecturer in the Department of Art and Art History, completed a mural, titled "A Walk in Nature," as part of the POW! WOW! San Jose 2019 Global Arts and Music Festival held from Oct. 17th through the 27th. Originating in Hawaii in 2010, POW! WOW! Festivals happen in over a dozen cities around the world. 2019 marked the third year of the festival in San Jose and featured a dozen artists from around the world who painted murals at various sites throughout San Jose during the week-long festival.

Eastburn's mural is located at South 1st Street and Virginia Street in Downtown. The mural depicts a cartoon rendering of the artist's dog taking a walk in a naturalistic setting. The imagery is meant to be a metaphor for appreciating and interacting with the natural world and the importance of preserving the natural landscape against increased development. Eastburn's research incorporates both studio as well as public art in order to reach a broader audience and activate disused public space.
