Tammy Madsen

Tammy L. Madsen (Ph.D., UCLA) is a Professor of Strategic Management, Leavey School of Business, Santa Clara University, where she has received the University President’s Special Recognition Award. Integrating work in strategy, innovation, and organizational evolution, her research spans several themes: competitive heterogeneity, temporary advantage and cohort effects; the influence of economic and institutional shocks on organizational, industry and cluster evolution; and co-innovation platforms, ecosystem growth and interfirm collaboration. Tammy’s research has received various awards from the Strategic Management Division, Academy of Management, including the Glueck Best Paper Award, and appears in outlets such as: Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Management Studies, Industrial and Corporate Change, Journal of Knowledge Management and International Marketing Review. She recently co-authored the fourth edition of Gordon Walker’s textbook, Modern Competitive Strategy (2016, McGraw-Hill Press).

Tammy serves on the editorial review boards of the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, and Organization Science, and is a member of the Board of Editors, Strategic Management Review. She has been actively engaged in professional service throughout her career. For the Academy of Management, she has served as Assistant Program Chair, Program Chair and Division Chair of the Strategic Management Division, and also has served on the division’s executive and research committees. Early in her career, Tammy served in a similar leadership role for the College of Organization Science (INFORMS). For the Strategic Management Society, Tammy is the Associate Director of the Strategy Research Foundation’s Dissertation Grant Program, and has served on Competitive Strategy Interest Group’s executive committee. 

Tammy teaches in the areas of strategy and innovation in the MBA, Executive MBA, and Executive Development programs at SCU where she has received the Leavey School of Business’ Extraordinary Faculty Awards for her teaching, research and service contributions. She is currently a member of the Leavey’s School’s Dean’s Council and has previously served as Chair of the Management Department. Tammy also holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (UC Santa Barbara) and a M.S. in Systems Management (USC). Prior to joining SCU, she was member of the faculty at Southern Methodist University. She began her professional career as a test and evaluation engineer for the weapon control systems on the F14 aircraft. She subsequently worked as a design engineer and program manager at Delco Electronics, General Motors. In her downtime, you’ll find her surfing or ocean swimming.
