Grand Reunion Profile on Alumni Scott Bauer
Scott Bauer, ACE alum from the 2002 Cohort, is the Chief Marketing Officer at Jamul Casino. We were able to speak with Scott recently about how his unique career decisions after graduating from SCU led him to his current role.
Scott received degrees in both MIS and Economics, but his career choices ultimately led to his role as a marketing executive. After SCU, Scott knew that he wanted to begin his post-grad life in San Diego, the place he called home. By utilizing his connections, he was able to find work in San Diego in a finance/information systems role as a Financial Analyst for a tech company. When Scott’s manager at this company had left to work in finance for a casino, he recruited Scott to join him in the move to become a Finance Manager, and Scott accepted.
While initially focused solely on finance, due to high turnover at the time, his management role eventually led to him working closely with the marketing department. From there, Scott was asked to officially move to marketing to steady the casino’s shift through the period of turmoil. With “diligent persistence” in regards to the “pursuit of excellence”, Scott’s consistent hard work paid off and ultimately led to his promotion to Chief Marketing Officer for the casino.
Regarding his career shift, Scott notes that “a career can take you places you never thought”. When describing the industry he works in, Scott states that it was not what he expected and it’s never boring. He “could be in a board meeting at 3:00 pm and, not long after, be speaking to guests at a celebrity chef dinner”. Ultimately though, it is a very “diverse place to work in terms of skill, how things work, and how a person’s day can change”.
In terms of career advice, Scott emphasizes how performing well, time after time, is essential for making a great impression on employers. Also, he states that people who are eager to learn different things, go outside their comfort zone, and who welcome opportunities are characteristics that can really open doors for them in the future. Essentially, these skills help to differentiate a candidate from others.
Thank you Scott for sharing your experience and advice with us! If you are interested in positions in the casino industry and would like to get in contact with Scott, feel free to reach out to Brenda and she can put you in touch with him.
