Impactful Classes in Deciding a Major
At the start of college, some SCU students may have a strong sense of the major they will choose to declare. For others, taking classes in the subject helps to bring the topic to life. As such, it ultimately takes in class experience to truly confirm an interest for a major. Following are some of the classes that have been most impactful in confirming major decisions for three current ACE students.
A senior MIS major says that OMIS 105, database management systems, influenced them to pursue a degree in MIS. The class gave students the opportunity to manipulate data and other metrics and come up with unique visualizations. It was also a good foundation for the framework behind the type of thinking that is required in MIS classes, showing how logic is implemented throughout the databases and systems.
One Marketing major shared that Marketing 183, customer behavior, was the most interesting marketing class they’ve taken because of the focus on consumer behavior and because they had the opportunity to create their own advertisements from which they collected data. In terms of confirming their marketing major that they had always wanted to pursue, Marketing 181, the principles of marketing, also played an important role.
Another ACE senior majoring in Economics recounts that Econ 3, introduction to international economics, was the class that drove them towards their major in Economics because of how it allowed them to think broadly and analytically and opened up multiple career paths for them. However, Econ 142, the economics of sports, was one of their most memorable and interesting classes within their major, as it united their interests and helped them better understand the markets that drive sports.
