Antonio Varela: Broadening Horizons: My Study Abroad Experience as a Senior
From the moment I arrived in Milan, I was captivated by the city’s blend of history, culture, and modernity. Living in a residence hall with students from all over the world, from China, Chile, Spain, Germany, and of course Italy, allowed me to immerse myself in a diverse environment filled with a mutual exchange of curiosity and tradition. Every conversation with my fellow exchange students was a chance to gain new perspectives, learn about different cultures, and build friendships.
The academic experience abroad complemented my business studies at SCU by offering a global perspective on commerce, economics, and cultural dynamics. Engaging with international students inside and outside of the classroom, and learning from professors with extensive international industry experience, challenged me to think critically about global business while also allowing me to complete the last few courses of my finance major. My academic experience abroad reinforced the importance of cultural intelligence in today’s interconnected world, an invaluable lesson as I prepare to enter the workforce.
Beyond the classroom, my time in Italy was filled with unforgettable moments. From wandering through the ancient ruins of Rome, exploring the coasts of Cinque Terre, or gliding along the canals of Venice, every adventure deepened my appreciation for Italy’s history and the power of human connection. The warmth of the Italian people made the experience even more meaningful. Whether sharing traditional meals like risotto alla Milanese or practicing Italian phrases over dinner with local friends, I felt embraced by the Italian culture that surrounded me.
One of the greatest takeaways from my study abroad experience was the lesson of adaptability. Navigating new cities, overcoming language barriers, and stepping outside my comfort zone taught me resilience. I discovered that some of the most rewarding experiences come from embracing the unknown with an open heart and mind.
I am incredibly grateful to SCU and the Leavey School of Business for supporting my journey abroad. SCU’s commitment to fostering global learning experiences empowered me to step beyond the familiar. As I approach graduation, I carry with me a renewed sense of curiosity, cultural awareness, and an eagerness to apply these lessons to my future endeavors. For any SCU student considering studying abroad, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the leap. It’s a journey that will challenge you, inspire you, and leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
