BUSN 188 Has Tremendously Opened My Eyes to the Degree of Poverty and Inequality within Silicon Valley
Thus far, BUSN 188 has tremendously opened my eyes to the degree of poverty and inequality within Silicon Valley. The discussion that Anthony and Liz, from Silicon Valley De-Bug,led was really influential in the sense that expanded on our examination at a different level of experience to focus on the issues of policy and action. Because I didn’t have much former understanding of how politics, lobby, and reform work, this for me was the most impactful takeaway from the lecture. In this sense, Anthony was able to deconstruct my assumption that individuals like me cannot make a difference in policy and reform. All in all, I would describe the class on De-Bug as insightful, eye opening, and actually self-reflective.
Looking at the broader picture, this class has really opened my eyes to issues of inequality and regressive policy within my community. For example, even being raised in the Bay Area, I had never heard of the large homeless communities like the “jungle.” After seeing the danger that young children and particularly women have to face because they have no other option, I feel as though something needs to be done to ensure that each human being has the right to at least physiological and safety needs.
In working with Sweet Passions, I want to make sure I and my teammates are always thinking from the perspective of Blanca and Luis. If we make suggestions without really being present to the market conditions and customers of Sweet Passions specifically, we might be suggesting something not useful to their particular operation. Additionally, if we aren’t thinking from their perspective, we might miss a valuable and necessary opportunity or idea. Overall, I think we have been doing a good job at being conscious of the specific demands of Sweet Passions. But once we complete our market report and have a more in depth understanding of Sweet Passions and its industry, it will be imperative to double check and ensure that our current ideas still correspond and fit with the market conditions and considerations particular to Sweet Passions.
