Working with Mr. Rivera and NPI Has Been an Amazing Opportunity

Ryan reflects on the group's efforts moving Green Bay Hauling onto a new accounting software system with the goal of securing a loan for the business.

Only three weeks in and our work with our business owner, M. Henry Rivera, is really starting to ramp up. Recently, we have been putting a lot of time and effort into organizing all of Mr. Rivera’s year-to-date financial information into a basic accounting software in order to prepare accurate and up to day financial statements that can then be used to secure another loan for the business. Last time, Mr. Rivera came to Santa Clara and we spent about four hours working with him in the library on this. Mr. Rivera came energized and ready to get to work, which was really nice for the group. He even did some work on his own organizing his paperwork the best he could to make the transfer process onto the accounting software much more efficient. This transfer is something that has been somewhat stressful for the group because it is something that we want to get right. Securing this loan is very important to Mr. Rivera and for us is essentially the end goal of this entire project. While the original plan was to set Mr. Rivera up with a QuickBooks system, as we did more research into it, we found that the platform was overly complex to suit Mr. Rivera’s needs and was simply too complicated for us to learn and teach. Instead, we found a basic software called Wave Accounting that is simple enough to accomplish the goals we have set out to accomplish with Mr. Rivera. This platform is also free which is an added bonus. Moving forward, we hope to finish the transfer process soon so we can secure the loan as soon as possible. A personal goal for us is to secure the loan before summer kicks into full gear, because that is the start if the busy season for Mr. Rivera and being able to have more boxes would benefit him greatly.

One other little thing that the group has done is that we traveled to the local Office Depot and bought a simple filing cabinet for Mr. Rivera. While small, having a central place to organize and keep papers is essential for any business. While he currently is somewhat organized and has all his paperwork sorted by month, it is all sorted into folders and stacked up. Just being able to keep these folders in one cabinet is much more efficient.

Working with Mr. Rivera and NPI in general has been amazing opportunity, and the group is incredibly excited to continue providing our support in any way we can. Mr. Rivera himself has been an extreme pleasure to work and have a relationship with. It is very clear that he is just as excited about the project as we are and loves every minute we are together. At the end of the day, that is what is most important, that the business owners are happy.
