Maddie Thompson, a rising ACE senior, has recently been elected as the Director of Santa Clara University’s Activities Programming Board (APB). Here she describes her new role, interest in APB, and provides advice for other students on how to get involved.

So, what exactly is APB? APB is the main event planning organization on campus and one of the nine Chartered Student Organizations. APB works throughout the year to put on a wide range of events for all Santa Clara students to enjoy. Some of these events include “the spring concert, bronco buses to events outside of SCU, wellness and de-stress events, speakers, comedians, and of course, lots of mingling and food”. These events help to encourage and cultivate APB’s mission of promoting community across all individuals and groups on campus. As the APB Director, Maddie will be focused on assisting her team logistically, as well as inspiring them to deliver on APB’s mission. In terms of setting goals for next year, Maddie highlights the importance of making sure the team is inclusive, adaptive to change, and continuously working to create engaging, educational, and empowering events.

Reflecting on her time in APB thus far, Maddie explains that as a freshman, she was eager to get involved on campus. APB had been recommended to her by a friend and was highly regarded. In her sophomore year, she became the APB Speaker and Outreach Events Manager. During her time in this role, she fell in love with the “close-knit” team dynamic and being able to see the positive impact of events on Santa Clara students. Additionally, she enjoyed the opportunity to meet and work with many incredible individuals.

APB is always encouraging students to get involved. Currently, they are hiring for the 2019-2020 school year. Maddie advises interested students to read about the various positions available and complete an application. There are many different ways to get involved and events to explore. Maddie encourages all students to participate saying that it is never too late to get involved and promote change on campus.
