Barbara Chen: My Career Journey Over the Past Four Years!
On campus, I had the privilege of being involved in the ACE Leadership Program. Through this, I was able to further understand myself and what I wanted to achieve professionally. This included how I fit into a workplace and how I would achieve my career goals. I discovered my strength in relationship-building and how I wanted to utilize my values in working with others.
Off-campus, I put the effort into networking with different professionals who worked in fields I was curious about exploring. Through networking, I was able to find out more about potential career paths and narrowing down the different companies and careers out of endless possibilities.
Throughout college, I was always open to different opportunities since I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to do. I knew I liked analytics and math, but I also wanted to do something that involved working with others. In order to figure out how I could achieve both, I used my sophomore year internship to try a potential career path. That summer, I worked for PwC in consulting and discovered how much I enjoyed working in an advisory role. I also loved the company and coworkers I had and decided to return the next year as a Cyber Risk & Reg - Business Processes Consulting Intern. Now, I will be returning to the same position full-time. I was able to find out more about PwC through the university recruiter and found the actual job listing through LinkedIn.
The recruiting process for consulting in Big 4 firms starts way earlier than most expect, most internships opening anywhere from 12-18 months before. They usually continue to recruit up until 6 months before the start of the internship, but it can close any time earlier due to positions filling up, so it’s best to apply earlier!
The most important lessons I’ve learned from my internships are lessons of communication and how relationship-building are the foundations for a productive work environment. I was able to learn more from my managers to become more confident in my skills and what I can provide for my team as an intern, and in the future, as an associate.
