What are you doing this summer? At Miller Center I am partnered with Hipocampus, a childcare social enterprise, based in Mexico that aims to break the generational socioeconomic gap through holistic early education programs. Here, I conducted data wrangling, analysis, and visualizations to formulate an impact report, using numbers to showcase the tangible differences Hipocampus is making to their community and company partners.
Hopefully you’ve grown both professionally and personally from this summer experience. Name one or two “life” lessons you learned and will carry forward after graduation. Unlike an assignment with clear rubrics and action items laid out, identifying the right issue to tackle and what the client truly wants can be tricky beyond the classroom, as it requires significant context regarding the industry as well as the community being served. Trust and communications play a key role - so is asking the right questions, and having a regular meeting time scheduled so far has been the most effective way to achieve both.
What has been the most memorable part of your experience? For me, it has been presenting the data visualizations of the CEDI (a metric of children's development) growth trajectories overtime to the founders and co-founders - they were so excited as the data has never been utilized in this format before. It really made me feel the meaning of the work we're doing, as well as how it helps celebrate the wonderful things that our founders have been contributing to the world.
What advice would you give to younger students who are searching for summer opportunities?Sophomore internships are often difficult to find, especially for international students - try looking for opportunities within the university as they also hire for amazing roles. Do not fear rejections, as some recruiters may reach out to you for a different role. Also, remember to follow up if you don't hear back! I got my position 6 months after the initial interview, so stay engaged.
