LSB has been developing resources for students hoping to break into the world of Venture Capital. There are several new exciting opportunities to look into if you are interested in VC including the Venture Capital Association, Venture Capitalist Essentials Course, and the Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC).  Additionally, Bronco Venture Accelerator is recruiting this summer's cohort of companies.

Venture Capital Association is a new club founded in the spring quarter, 2019. The purpose of the club is to create a hub for students interested in VC, startups, entrepreneurship, innovation, and

  •    Generate interest in VC, cultivate talent for SCU's VCIC team through education.
  •    Have meaningful conversations and information sharing around career opportunities, and educational/engagement opportunities (VCIC, CIE, pitch competitions, ect.).
  •    Increase Santa Clara University's presence in Silicon Valley by engaging in what made Silicon Valley, by bringing in guest speakers and panelists.
  •    Increase and encourage greater diversity in VC. Historically, women and people of color are drastically underrepresented in VC. We are all starting out at square one, and regardless of demographic we all have roughly equal opportunity to break into VC through things like the VC Club, VCIC, and CIE.

Venture Capitalist Essentials is a new course being offered in fall quarter 2019 by the Management Department.  Look out for an email about the course details.

This course provides insight into the thought processes of Venture Capitalists. It will cover all aspects of deal flow including sourcing opportunities, performing due diligence, determining valuation and constructing term sheets. While inspired as a way to prepare students for the Venture Capital Investment Competition (held in the Winter quarter), it offers an introduction to the VC world for students interested in becoming investors as well as those hoping to obtain VC funds as entrepreneurs.

Course Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify an opportunity worthy of financing.
  2. Assess valuation of an opportunity.
  3. Conduct in-depth due diligence on a founder, a venture and its team prior to funding.
  4. Effectively construct, present and negotiate a term sheet.
  5. Recognize the difference between the funder’s perspectives and those of the company being financed.
  6. Describe difference between venture capital, private equity, early stage and traditional financing sources.

Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC)

Global VCIC is the world’s largest venture capital competition with over 70 universities competing. VCIC is the only place where students get to be VCs for the day. Venture Capitalists (VCs) are involved in investments in startups, disruptive technologies, and are the major engine for innovation in our economy.  VCIC is a role-playing competition in which you get to be venture capitalists (VCs) for the day. Real startups come pitch to you, and real VCs judge the best VC team.

For how to get involved in VCIC 2020 contact Christina Johnson at c3johnson@scu.edu or Francine Gordon at fgordon@scu.edu.
