This is a notification of an Accounting and A&IS major requirement change for students declaring either of these majors after December 20, 2019.
All current and future majors should review the information below to determine how it may impact their major course selection.
The Accounting Department is pleased to announce a new course for Accounting and A&IS majors. Information about the new course is provided below.
Course Number and Title: ACTG 120 - Accounting Data Analysis and Visualization.
Course Description: The course is designed to prepare students with deeper understanding of both accounting process and the application of accounting knowledge in performing data analysis by leveraging two commonly used tools in data analysis and visualization – Microsoft Excel and Tableau.
Course Units: 5-unit upper division course
Course Prerequisites: ACTG 11 and OMIS 15
Change of Major Requirements: ACTG 120 will replace the 2-unit ACTG 20 as a required course for Accounting and A&IS majors. As a result of this change, the required number of accounting units will increase by 3, but the required number of accounting courses will remain the same for Accounting majors (8 courses) and A&IS majors (7 courses). ACTG 120 is a prerequisite to ACTG 130, but can be taken concurrently with ACTG 130.
Transition Plan:
1. Students who declare Accounting/A&IS majors before December 20, 2019 have the option of taking either ACTG 20 or ACTG 120 to satisfy major requirements. Students who declare Accounting/A&IS majors after December 20, 2019 need to take ACTG 120 to satisfy major requirements.
2. ACTG 20 will be discontinued after Spring 2020. Students who intend to take ACTG 20 should take it in Winter or Spring 2020.
3. ACTG 120 will be offered for the first time in Fall 2020, and will be offered in Winter and Spring 2021. Current sophomores who declare after December 20, 2019 (or declare before but choose to take the new course) will take ACTG 120 in Fall 2020 or Winter 2021. Please note that ACTG 120 needs to be taken before or concurrently with ACTG 130.
4. Current first-year students who declare Accounting/A&IS majors before December 20, 2019 will not have the option of taking ACTG 20 due to its discontinuation after Spring 2020. These first-year students can take ACTG 120 in the sophomore year after meeting the prerequisites.
5. After the transitional year, students are encouraged to take ACTG 120 in the Spring quarter of sophomore year.
