Faculty Spotlight: Stacey Ritter, Accounting Department
What Class She Teaches: I have been teaching ACTG 11 (Introduction to Financial Accounting) for business majors and non-business majors. I feel so fortunate to teach SCU students from all different backgrounds, as I always learn new and interesting things from them! Also, because this is an introductory course, I love that I get the unique opportunity to share with students how meaningful and exciting a career in accounting can be!!
Hobbies/Interests: Because we have three young kids, I enjoy spending time with them the most. Whether we are at the Tennis courts, or hiking, or cuddled up on the couch reading a good book out loud together, or watching them earn Taekwondo belts, any free time I have I try to spend as a family.
Biography: After graduating from UT Austin, I spent most of my accounting career in auditing and consulting with Deloitte, working primarily on large multinational engagements. I love to travel; so this was a perfect career for me, serving clients all over the US and in places like Kuala Lumpur and St. Criox. I also joined the profession right after the implementation of SOX. So, I had the opportunity to be an integral part of some exciting changes and challenges that our profession faced back then. Now-a-days, young professionals get to look forward to navigating the accounting and finance implications of some incredibly interesting issues, like: sustainability reporting, artificial intelligence, crypto currencies, and metaverses! In my academic research, I have the opportunity to think about some exciting areas of accounting as well, such as when and why companies make anonymous disclosures on social media, and how reporting of sustainability issues in companies' financial reports might help curb our global impacts of climate change.
Advice: "There are so many exciting career paths an accounting major can take you! One piece of advice I would give is to always see yourself as a "lifelong learner." Having a curious mindset will not only serve you well throughout your career, but it will also keep you engaged and help you thrive in everything that you do in life".
