BUSN 70: Contemporary Business Issues

Get a sneak peak at what this introductory business course has to offer incoming business students.

The Contemporary Business Issues, BUSN 70, is an introductory course that is required for all incoming business students. This course seeks to provide all students with the baseline required for corses taken later at the Leavey School of Business.  Dr. Nik Tehrani, a BUSN 70 faculty, says this about the course:  "In BUSN 70, students are introduced to all major areas of business, including management, finance, accounting, marketing, and strategy. This broad foundation helps students explore various disciplines and determine which path aligns best with their interests and career goals. What makes this course truly unique is the faculty, seasoned professionals who bring a wealth of real-world experience to the classroom, seamlessly connecting theory to practice through relevant, real-life examples and insights".

To further emphasize the goal of BUSN 70 to provide information to students that comes full circle, students are required to dive into a simulation known as MikesBikes. Within this simulation, students will have the opportunity to run a business of their own, and learn critical skills such as report analysis, decision making, forecasting, etc. MikesBikes is a simulation in which students run their own bicycle company. They begin as single-players, where they can refine their skills and better understand the simulation. Then, students join a team and compete with the whole class.  Professor Harris describes this project as "a comprehensive business simulation that is interesting, complex and challenging. It is a great way to experience many of the aspects of running a business and making critical strategic and tactical business decisions (such as price, product, marketing, capacity, etc), without the potential real life downside. It is a favorite experience for many of the students.”

Lastly, aside from purely academic learning goals, BUSN 70 also serves as a place for students to learn practical skills and have fun. Students are given a chance to connect with one another through participation and discussions in class, and through their team projects. BUSN 70 serves as an introduction into giving presentations, working in teams, developing strong communication, which will assist them throughout their time at SCU and into their professional careers as well.  Bryant summarizes: "BUSN 70 really is a unique course. There was no other class that taught me so many lessons and tied what we learned to real life concepts. The professors are uncontested when it comes to teaching skills and professional skills."
