Do you have a favorite class that you are taking? Why?
One of my favorite classes is Korean 1. From not knowing any Korean when I got here to now being able to understand some words that people walking by say and read signs on the streets, learning Korean and applying it in its country of origin has truly been a rewarding experience. I also enjoy my Introduction to Korean Studies class. This is a unique class because we don’t just learn Korean history through facts/history lectures; instead, we read Korean stories (translated to English) that people wrote in the past. It’s interesting to learn about Korean history by studying actual Korean literature, as it gives insight into Korean people’s thoughts and feelings at the time.

What do you like about your program/university?
I like the strong school spirit that Yonsei University students have. Walking on campus, you’ll see at least a dozen students wearing the signature Yonsei varsity jacket. The cheering during the Yon-Ko games (sports games between Yonsei and Korea University) was also an amazing sight to see. Students from both universities were wearing their school colors and dancing to the cheering. Besides the school spirit, I have also enjoyed walking through Yonsei’s beautiful campus. It’s a huge campus with a nature trail that makes morning walks or walks after class feel very peaceful.

What has been your favorite place that you visited so far or favorite part about your city? Why?
My favorite place I visited so far is Eunpyeong Hanok Village and Bukhansan National Park. The view of the hanok houses from the top at a nearby cafe was breathtaking. It was also very quiet when I visited with a friend, so we were able to enjoy the silence and take in the moment. After, we went to Bukhansan National Park, which was close by, and hiked up the mountain a bit where we saw a beautiful temple. Overall, the stunning hanok houses, temples, and nature have been my favorite sights.

What advice would you give to the Leavey students planning to study abroad next year?
My advice for students applying for study abroad is to research the countries/universities that really interest them. Watch videos, read blogs, and ask other students who studied abroad what their experiences were like. It’s important to be open when considering where you want to study abroad, especially if you need certain classes to be on with your academic plan, which not all programs might have. After deciding on a country, attend the information sessions that SCU Global hosts, as they are very helpful in making you both feel and be prepared for the experience.
