The Department of Public Health welcomes our two new faculty members, Dr. Paul Gilbert and Dr. Natasha Glendening!

Dr. Paul Gilbert joins SCU as Associate Professor from his former position as a faculty member and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health at the University of Iowa College of Public Health. Dr. Gilbert studies patterns of hazardous drinking, risk of alcohol use disorders, and the multiple pathways to recovery from an alcohol problem. Much of his scholarship has focused on disparities by gender, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Dr. Gilbert joins SCU as part of our incoming College of Arts and Sciences LGBTQ+ Studies cluster hire. Dr. Gilbert earned a ScM in Health and Social Behavior from the Harvard School of Public Health and a PhD in Health Behavior from the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health. He also has an appointment as Affiliate Senior Scientist at the Alcohol Research Group, based in Emeryville, CA.

Natasha Glendening

Dr. Natasha Glendening completed her PhD in Public Health at UC Irvine in 2025, with a concentration in Global Health, and completed graduate work in African Development at the London School of Economics. Dr. Glendening’s research interests focus on epidemiology (particularly infectious disease and spatial epidemiology) and global health, with an interest in geospatial mapping. Her research has examined malaria prevalence and risk factors among artisanal and small-scale gold-miners in Western Ethiopia, as well as the utilization of machine learning methods, to identify unmet healthcare needs among isolated populations in Ethiopia.
