Orientation Leader: 2024 Application Process

Being an Orientation Leader (OL) is one of the premier leadership opportunities Santa Clara University has to offer. The Orientation program is one of the essential pieces in a new student's transition to the university and the OLs are the heart of the program. OLs come from various backgrounds, areas of study, and personality types. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to apply to be an Orientation Leader!

Here are a few things to help as you consider applying:

1) Attend an Info Session! Want to learn more about the OL position and selection process? Join us for in-person sessions during the dates below:

  • Info Session #1: Tuesday, January 30, 12-1pm (Locatelli Center, 1st Floor)
  • Info Session #2: Wednesday, February 7, 10-11am (Locatelli Center, Room 209)
  • Info Session #3: Thursday, February 15, 4-5pm (California Mission Room, Benson Center)

2) Complete the Online Application by visiting tinyurl.com/2024SCUOLApp

  • Applications are due Monday, February 26, 2024 at 11:59pm PDT
  • Two rounds of Interviews
    • Group Interviews (In-Person): February 29 - March 2, 2024
    • Individual Interviews (In-Person): March 5 - March 8, 2024
  • Offers will be made to selected candidates on March 12, 2024

If you are on the fence about applying, just do it! Give yourself time to consider your options for this upcoming summer. Being an OL requires accountability, creativity, and thoughtfulness. You will be challenged in new ways and you will learn from these challenges.

Qualifications for Application, Selection, and Conditions of Employment

  • Have a minimum cumulative and term GPA of 2.50 or above at the time of application and during the term of employment
  • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student for the entire academic year
  • Be in good disciplinary standing with the university at the time of application and during the entire term of the position

Compensation/Benefits

  • OLs will receive a wage of $17.75/hour
  • Limited Flex Points for meals will be provided during Summer training
  • On-campus summer housing for June and July

Time Commitment

Where there will be some outliers, the time commitments for an Orientation Leader are primarily during the Spring quarter, the week after Spring finals through July 31, the last week of August, and September 17-22.

New OL Welcome Meeting & Retreat Overview: March 15, 2024 (Time TBD) 

  • Welcome meeting for all newly-selected OLs, providing overview of what to expect for OL Retreat.

Orientation Leader Retreat: March 22 - March 24 (1 weekend)

  • Overnight leadership and team bonding retreat at off-site location.

Spring Quarter: April 10 - June 9 (3-5 hours/week)

  • Weekly OL Training Course, Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00 pm: (2 hours)
  • Weekly assignments (1-3 hours)

Summer Training: June 20 - June 28 & July 8 - July 12 (40 hours/week)

  • Topics focus on SCU campus resources & leadership development
  • Training will be on weekdays from 9am - 5pm

Orientation Programming and Events: July 15-30, 2024 (30-40 hours/week) 

  • Training and weekly meetings (8 hours/week)
  • Orientation Programming (20-30 hours/week) 
    • Collaborating with OLs and campus partners to develop, prepare, and facilitate virtual activities and programming for first-year and transfer students 
    • These times will be flexible, meaning that you will be able to plan and coordinate your schedule to fit your schedule 
  • Session 1: Mon-Tues July 15-16
  • Session 2: Thurs-Fri July 18-19
  • Session 3: Mon-Tues July 22-23
  • Session 4: Thurs-Fri July 25-26
  • Session 5: Mon-Tues July 29-30
  • Session 6: Thursday September 19

Welcome Weekend and Fall Preparation: September 17-22, 2024 (20-30 hours)

  • OLs will assist with welcoming the Class of 2028 to campus
  • Access to early residence hall move-in dates for the Fall quarter
  • Assist with final Orientation session on Thursday, September 19
