Taxes

Navigating the U.S. tax system can be confusing—especially for international students. But it’s important to understand your responsibilities and get the right help to file correctly and on time.

Do International Students Need to File Taxes?

Yes! Even if you didn’t earn income, you are still required to file tax forms each year as an international student on an F-1 or J-1 visa.

  • With income: You’ll need to file federal and possibly state tax returns.
  • Without income: You must still submit Form 8843 to the IRS.

Key Tax Deadlines

  • Federal Deadline: April 15
  • California State Deadline: Typically the same as the federal deadline, but confirm yearly at the Franchise Tax Board

Tax Filing Resources

  • SCU Tax Resource Page – Guidance and updates specific to SCU students.
  • IRS Free File – Offers free options for simple returns
  • Sprintax – Designed specifically for international students and nonresidents. SCU may offer discount codes.
  • TurboTax & H&R Block – Be cautious! These tools are typically for U.S. residents. International students generally can’t use these services unless they have been in the U.S. for at least 5 years and meet residency requirements for tax purposes.

Tip: Always check eligibility first for any online filing systems and tools you use.

Watch Out for Tax Scams

  • The IRS will never call, text, or email asking for immediate payment or personal information.
  • Ignore threats involving arrest or deportation—these are common scams.
  • Report suspicious emails or calls to ISS or directly to the IRS

Tip: When in doubt, reach out to SCU’s International Student and Scholars (ISS) for personalized guidance and questions!
