Francine Gordon and Christina Johnson coordinated SCU’s participation in the 2018 Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC).  This was the first time our undergrads competed and the first time since 2013 that our MBAs competed.  Organized by the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC, this international competition assesses how well each school’s team functions as a VC firm. After listening to startups pitch their ideas, each team is judged on the quality of questions addressed to each startup, how thorough their due diligence, how sensible their term sheet (if they decide to fund) and ability to explain their decision to a panel of real VCs. Interested students attended multiple training sessions led by Steve Foster, Chair of the CIE Advisory Board.
Our Undergrad team took second place.  Although our MBAs did not win, they got terrific accolades for their valuation and term sheet of the company they selected.  One of the judges who had been working with that company for four years jumped up after the team did their “partner pitch” to announce he was amazed at how accurate their valuation was- especially given the limited time in which they had to work.

We all learned a lot throughout the process and look forward to applying that information to our participation next year.
