Dr. Andy Tsay, professor and department chair of Operations Management & Information Systems, was recently quoted in a piece for The Mercury News which looked at the viability of Trump’s policies seeking to return manufacturing to the United States. The article noted how tech companies like Tesla automate so much of their domestic manufacturing, and that the reclaiming of the manufacturing industry doesn’t necessarily mean a huge increase in jobs.

“The question everyone seems to be asking is: will the iPhones come back?” he said. “My answer is: there’s not a good economic reason for it.”

An excerpt from the article:
Trump has pressured Apple CEO Tim Cook to make iPhones here, but the smartphone manufacturing industry already is entrenched in China. Everything from the companies that make smartphone components to the technicians who repair the factory machines is there, Tsay said, and moving that massive ecosystem to the U.S. would be a costly and time-consuming endeavor.

The piece was also picked up by a number of other outlets including the East Bay Times, SiliconValley.com, and the Marin Independent Journal.
