Andy Tsay, professor and chair of the Operations Management and Information Systems department, was recently interviewed for an article in The New York Times which discussed Apple’s employment of Americans in the wake of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s promises to force big companies to bring their manufacturing back to the United States. The article pointed out the numerous jobs beyond manufacturing that Apple brings to the American economy, using the immense Apple campus in Texas as an example. Professor Tsay, who studies the management of design, manufacturing, and procurement in heavily outsourced supply chains, discussed the nature of Apple’s shift towards software and services, and the benefits of having these new jobs in the US.

An excerpt from the article:
“It’s easy to ship a phone, and it’s harder to ship a computer,” said Andy Tsay, a professor at Santa Clara University who has studied global manufacturing patterns. “And it’s harder still for cars and refrigerators.”

Over time, the value of Apple’s business is shifting away from hardware like the iPhone and into software such as apps and services like Apple Music, Mr. Tsay said. And those jobs can be much better for workers. “There are fewer industrial accidents working in a call center,” he said. “There is probably more gender equity. And it’s probably better for customers, too.”
