Kirthi Kalyanam, JCPenney Research Professor, spoke on KGO-AM about REI’s decision to close on Black Friday. He was also quoted in a Delaware Online story about retailers that have developed strong fan bases.

“Dr. Kirthi Kalyanam of Santa Clara University says don’t expect other retailers to follow suit. ‘REI’s co-op ownership structure may make it more capable of doing these kind of things.’ He sees the REI customer as unique in retailing. ‘They may not necessarily be part of the same crowd that runs through the malls on the day after thanksgiving.’”
