Professor Kirthi Kalyanam speaks about Amazon’s ability to enter the healthcare industry.
JCPenney Research Professor and Director of RMI Krithi Kalyanam Head Shot

Kirthi Kalyanam, L.J. Skaggs Distinguished Professor, marketing department chair, director of the Retail Management Institute, and faculty director of the Executive MBA, was featured in an article discussing the adverse reaction that JPMorgan Chase & Co. has received after announcing it’s healthcare partnership with Amazon and Berkshire Hathaway. The announcement has hurt the stocks of many other health insurers such as UnitedHealth Group, Cigna Corp., etc.

Professor Kalyanam emphasizes Amazon’s ability to enter this healthcare sector given it’s great success already as a company. Originally covered by the Wall Street Journal, the story was also picked up by Bloomberg and in a couple similar article on Newsmax Finance (here and here) providing more insight on Amazon’s specific role in healthcare.

A quote from the article:

“There’s the possibility for another Amazon Web Services success where they come out of nowhere and hit a home run,” Kirthi Kalyanam, director of the Retail Management Institute at Santa Clara University, told Bloomberg News. “Amazon just opened a cashier-less store. I don’t see any reason they can’t create a primary care facility that lets you just check in with your phone.”
