Graduate business students, led by Sanjv Das, William and Janice Terry Professor of Finance, analyzed call data provided by United Way Silicon Valley in order to gain insight into their community’s needs.

An excerpt from the article:
With the skyrocketing rents in Silicon Valley, it’s not surprising that housing is the number one reason people called United Way Silicon Valley’s 211 Santa Clara County information and referral line last year. That is one of the findings from a recent analysis of 2014 211 data by Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business under the leadership of Professor Sanjiv Ranjan Das.

Graduate students from Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business analyzed data from the top 30 call categories, which represented 60 percent of the 31,007 calls to 211 in 2014 data from Santa Clara County. Data from online inquiries was not included.

“The goal of this partnership with Santa Clara University and subsequent analysis was to better understand community needs through the data we have gathered from 211 and to inform decision-making policy going forward,” said Sabdra Miley, interim CEO of United Way Silicon Valley. “The data showed that teenagers and the elderly have the most distinct needs.”
