Professor Sundstrom teaches courses in microeconomics; data analysis and econometrics; the economics of race, ethnicity, and gender; economic history; and economics of the environment.
Professor Sundstrom's research interests include poverty and inequality, the economic history of labor markets, education, and related institutions, and the economics of race and gender. Recent research projects include the causes and effects of public libraries in the United States, patterns of poverty in the Silicon Valley region and the effectiveness of local antipoverty initiatives, and determinants of food insecurity in rural Central America.
He has published articles in a number of peer-reviewed journals, including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Economic History, Explorations in Economic History, the Industrial and Labor Relations Review, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Information and Culture, and Global Environmental Change. He is co-editor of the book, History Matters: Essays on Economic Growth, Technology, and Demographic Change (Stanford University Press).
Professor Sundstrom will serve as President of the Santa Clara University Faculty Senate during the 2017-18 academic year.
