Meeting the Dean!

Emily talks about the final dinner with supervisors and the dean of the Business School.

As this year comes to an end it’s almost unbelievable to think I will be graduating in a few short weeks. With my impending graduation around the corner, this also means the end of my time at SVCN. The Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits has become a home for me in more ways than I ever could have imagined. When I began this program I expected to learn much and grow professionally, however, I did not expect to also grow personally and gain great friends. My staff and bosses have taken me under their wing and mentored me through the struggles of getting my first job and realizing I am in fact worth a full-time “real job”, which I am proud to say I ended up landing in part because of the career workshops and support system my bosses consistently provided. Because of my immediate boss, Brian Mattos, I am now very confident in my excel usage as well as an overarching confidence in my capability to learn new platform—which is so marketable. (Thanks, Brian!)

Yesterday, the fellows and our professors (Jackie and Bill) got the chance to have dinner with our supervisors and the dean of the Business School, Caryn Beck-Dudley. This was a great way to end this program and get the chance to learn a bit more about the supervisors other than our own, whom many of us only had a brief meeting with in the Fall during the interview process. This was a very inspiration interaction, these supervisors have had impressive careers thus far and much to share with us. One of the key takeaways came from my CEO, Patricia Gardner, who told us it's ok to change careers and our generation is expected to change jobs quite frequently, around 3-5 years on average. We must follow our passions as they further evolve and develop, and this development may take us in different paths from those we originally started in. I love hearing the stories of people who were once in my shoes and who have been very successful, I want to learn as much as I can from them, so I too can be successful!
