This Fellowship Has Allowed Me the Chance to Learn So Much About the Nonprofit Sector As Well As How Policy Research Works
I’ve been placed at SVCN, the Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits, and it’s been a great experience so far. SVCN works with other nonprofits of the Silicon Valley. Their role is to standardize the information their member organizations share for the communities they work with, provide informational workshops, as well as create a network to connect their member organizations. This fellowship has allowed me the chance to learn so much about the nonprofit sector as well as how policy research works. I love my coworkers! They frequently give me great advice as I approach graduation and start to think about what type of career I want. They also create a very open and inviting work environment and welcomed me from day one.
My role within SVCN is their Social Media and Marketing Intern and I work directly with the Director of Technology & Marketing. Some of my responsibilities include aiding in day-to-day tasks, implementing a social media plan, doing research into social media/usage data, and eventually getting more involved with some policy work. Currently I’m working on creating a master spreadsheet from last quarter’s attendance information. This data will be used to eventually create statistics on the frequency of visits from organizations and individuals and get a better grasp at what organizations we are reaching beyond our member organizations. Next month we have one of our biggest events, “Funding Your Impact Summit”, in which we have many prominent speakers leading information sessions and workshops. I’m excited to see how large events work in the nonprofit world. This event will also give me a chance to practice my public speaking skills because I’ll be presenting many of the speakers—which is a bit nerve-wracking to be honest.
