Leavey Minors and Programs with Internship Opportunities

At the Leavey School of Business, students can get real world experience while completing their classes. Leavey offers unique opportunities to incorporate classwork with  hand-on work experiences that allow students to explore their career interests and build out their skills. Students are invited to think critically about the impact these opportunities have on their experience and on the greater community. 

Minors with Internships Opportunities

Students electing to pursue an Entrepreneurship minor will complete an internship working with an emerging for-profit startup through the required class, MGMT 198E:  Internship in Entrepreneurship. Students in the class are paired with a start-up for a quarter-long, hands on work experience.  

Through this minor, students can access the Real Estate Career Accelerator Program and participate in the annual Real Estate Symposium & Networking Event. The REI Career Accelerator Program (CAP) prepares students to navigate today’s evolving employment market. The CAP offers sector education in Sell-Side, Buy-Side, and Consulting/Advisory Services at both macro and micro levels while providing training opportunities in industry-valued skills like Data Organization & Visualization, Data Analysis & Modeling, and Data Presentation.

Students completing the Retail Studies minor are required to complete an internship in the summer or fall of their third year. Taking BUSN 198R, Retail Internship Seminar, allows students to reflect on their internship experiences, observations about the industry and future career opportunities. During their internships, students work  full-time to experience firsthand the culture and business of recognized, industry-leading innovators.  Internships can include roles in e-commerce, finance, sales, marketing, merchandising, in-store operations, buying, inventory management, supply chain, human resources and product development. 

Academic Programs with Internships and Work Experience

My Own Business Institute (MOBI) offers SCU undergraduate students from any discipline the opportunity to put their classroom learning into practice while developing skills and experience in every aspect of business ownership and management. Through Neighborhood Prosperity Initiative class, BUSN 188, students have the opportunity to work as consultants helping a small business owner from a local underserved community. BUSN 188: NPI is a two-quarter course offered in Winter and Spring quarters (two credits earned each quarter). The course meets the Experiential Learning for Social Justice (ELSJ) requirement.

Leavey juniors and seniors are eligible to apply for the Leavey Community Fellowship. This program places undergraduate business majors in paid, year-long internships at nonprofit and government organizations.  Fellows concurrently enroll in a year-long academic experience to reflect on and explore social and economic justice issues.  This program requires a year-long commitment from students and the time to work 8-10 hours per week, in-person, at their placement for the entire academic year.

The Sustainable Business Institute (SBI) collaborates with the Ciocca Center Innovation Fellows program. Innovation Fellows focuses on finding a pain point on our Santa Clara University campus and using design thinking methods and empathy to identify and implement solutions. This 3 quarter program is great for students who want to continue to improve and grow the Santa Clara community.  This program provides hands-on experience for participants to collaborate with a diverse group of students and work on projects that address real-world challenges, from sustainability to social impact. They connect with industry leaders, mentors, and like-minded peers who share a passion for making a difference.
