What are you doing this summer? I worked with ACAM, a nonprofit music education organization that provides music lessons for underserved children. In my role, I got to teach students classical and jazz piano, while also supporting the marketing team by creating flyers & social media content, performing outreach, and planning fundraisers.
Hopefully you’ve grown both professionally and personally from this summer experience. Name one or two “life” lessons you learned and will carry forward after graduation. This summer I really got to experience the difference that a positive environment can make. I enjoyed every day at ACAM because all the people were so nice, and it motivated me to do the best job I could. I saw it make a difference for the kids as well.
What has been the most memorable part of your experience? The most memorable part for me was our Faculty Showcase week, where the ACAM faculty each put on a performance showcasing their instrument. I had a lot of fun with mine, and also got to accompany some of the other faculty, giving me the opportunity to collaborate with professional musicians.
What advice would you give to younger students who are searching for summer opportunities?
Pick something that you are passionate about! While summer internships are very important for preparing for a career post graduation, I think they are also about finding what type of role/industry makes you happy and where you can find purpose in your work.
