What are you doing this summer?  This summer, I interned at General Mills as a Financial Analyst Intern in the Finance Leadership Development Program, supporting the Pet Sales Finance team. My main project was developing an automated Margin Scorecard and Heatmap that turned customer and product level financial data into clearer insights on profitability across customers, brands, and subcategories. I also had the opportunity to present my work and recommendations to senior finance leaders, learn from people across the company, and get a better understanding of what a career in finance actually looks like day to day.
Hopefully you’ve grown both professionally and personally from this summer experience. Name one or two “life” lessons you learned and will carry forward after graduation.  One lesson I learned is that curiosity is often more valuable than having all the answers. The people I learned the most from were the ones who kept asking why, looked beyond what was directly in front of them, and tried to understand the bigger picture.

What has been the most memorable part of your experience?  One of the most memorable experiences was attending a Twins game in the General Mills suite with the other five FLDP finance interns and senior finance leadership. It was such a unique way to connect with leaders outside of the office and get to know the people behind the roles.
What advice would you give to younger students who are searching for summer opportunities? Do not underestimate the value of relationships!! Applying online is important, but some of the best opportunities come from conversations, asking people about their experiences, and staying in touch. You never know which connection will lead to an introduction, an interview, or simply advice that changes how you approach your search.
