Beyond the Classroom

The Art and Art History Summer Scholarship grants up to four students $250 each to attend an art-related or art history-related college-level educational program over the summer.  The Mary F. and Gerald P. Scholarship is a merit scholarship, not need-based, and the recipient is judged upon outstanding work in a studio class. As the recipient of this scholarship, the funds will be automatically applied towards the student's tuition and/or student loans.

Art and Art History Summer Scholarship

The Department of Art and Art History at Santa Clara University will award up to four students (2 studio art and 2 art history) $250 each to attend an art-related or art history-related college-level educational program of their choice over the summer. The scholarship money can be used only towards tuition, fees and registration.

Students may apply for the scholarship during the first week of Spring quarter. Applications will be reviewed by a committee made up of faculty in the Department of Art and Art History. Two recipients in studio art and two recipients in art history will be selected for the scholarship. 

Proof of acceptance into an institution or program is required along with an invoice or bill of statement. Students can also be reimbursed for up to $250 with proof of receipt of payment. 

Mary F. and Gerald P. Sullivan S.J. Scholarship

This was originally the Jesuit Award which honored the best figurative artist in the department. When former faculty Gerry Sullivan S. J. was given an inheritance upon the death of his mother, this became a merit scholarship. The intent was to honor an outstanding junior status student whose figurative work in all classes stood out as exemplary. On occasion, a sophomore student is recognized for the award if they show outstanding promise.

We want to honor Fr. Sullivan’s memory and maintain the intent of the award by picking the best figurative artist or artists in the department. This does not exclude photography or digital art, but the right of passage in the department was always the figure drawing class. Students who focus in another area could be eligible if the discipline presents a focus on the figure. Faculty in the department nominate outstanding students for the award and the final decision is usually made in the Spring quarter.

This is a merit scholarship, not need-based, and should be judged upon outstanding work in studio classes. As a recipient of this scholarship, the funds will be automatically applied towards the student’s tuition and/or student loans. The award is often split between two students but can be awarded to an individual and it totals over $11,000. The scholarship goes toward tuition only and cannot be used in any other manner.
