2019 Art History Symposium

Symposiums

Each year the Department of Art and Art History hosts several art history symposium events in the spring quarter.

The Art History Student Research Paper Prize Competition, held in April every year, recognizes the best of our student's research achievements. Students can also participate in the annual Art History Student Research Symposium held in the spacious new gallery in the Edward M. Dowd Art and Art History Building. In addition, some of our best art history students are selected to represent Santa Clara University by giving a formal oral presentation of their research at the Annual Bay Area Undergraduate Art History Research Symposium. The symposium, now in its tenth year, is held at the de Young Museum in San Francisco and draws participants from almost a dozen colleges and universities around the greater Bay Area.

Art History Student Research Symposium and Paper Prize Competition
The Annual Art History Student Research Paper Prize Competition occurs in April and any student who received an A or A- on a research paper written for an art history course in the previous three quarters is eligible to enter. The faculty announces the winner of the paper prize in June at the annual BBQ and Awards Ceremony.

The Department also holds an annual Art History Student Research Symposium (AHSRS). Since 2004, the AHSRS provides students with an opportunity to present their research in a formal setting and format modeled after a professional conference. The Symposium is held in the Art and Art History gallery and draws a large audience from across the Santa Clara University community. Topics reflect student interests in a range of media from areas across the world, from ancient period to the present.

Annual Bay Area Undergraduate Art History Research Symposium
In addition, the art history faculty selects one of our best art history students to represent Santa Clara University at the Annual Bay Area Undergraduate Art History Research Symposium. Students at the symposium join their colleagues from other schools in giving formal oral presentations of their recent art history research. Undergraduate art history majors from colleges and universities from the greater Bay Area compete in this annual event, hosted by the de Young Museum in San Francisco, CA. In addition to SCU, participating institutions include Dominican University of California, Mills College, Saint Mary's College, San Francisco State University, Sonoma State University, Stanford University, and University of San Francisco. In 2015, two graduate students from UC Berkeley served as commentators and facilitated discussion with a large and diverse audience.
