Omar Davila Recognized by the College of Arts and Sciences
Francisco Jiménez Reaching Out Award
In recognition of faculty and staff who, through their actions and contributions to our local and global community, strive to serve society’s most disadvantaged and under-served members.
Colleagues and students alike praise Omar Davila for his impact on others. “Dr. Davila [creates] an empowering space where we engage in meaningful dialogue, prepare for leadership, and collaborate on research examining lived experiences and perspectives of future K-12 educators,” says one student.
In addition to being a core member of the Child Studies department, Davila leads the SCU Future Teachers Project. His mission is to develop transformative leaders from underrepresented backgrounds, with the purpose of dismantling educational inequality. His colleague adds that he reimagined the Future Teachers Project program from the ground up, transforming it into “a vital incubator for aspiring educators.”
His work opens doors for students historically excluded from higher education and the teaching profession. Through his mentorship, aspiring educators develop the confidence and commitment to address educational inequities in their own communities.
“His mentorship and encouragement have helped me grow not only as a student and future educator, but also as a leader committed to creating positive change in my community,” shares another student, who credits Davila with strengthening their commitment to becoming a high school history teacher serving underserved students.
Congratulations to Omar Davila, winner of the 2026 Francisco Jiménez Reaching Out Award!
