Political science majors selected as 2018-2019 Hackworth Fellows

Eoin Lyons, Isabella Rios, and Beau Scott to promote ethics among their undergraduate peers

Each year, the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics selects eight to nine seniors for the Hackworth Fellowship Program. The goal of the program is to have fellows promote ethical reflection and reflective ethical action among their undergraduate peers. Three political science majors were selected for the 2018-2019 school year.

Eoin Lyons
Eoin Lyons '19 is a Hackworth Fellow with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. His project includes a review of the campus ethics program to discover how the Center can better engage with students, faculty, staff, and other community members.

Eoin is a finance and political science double major with a minor in economics. Around the university, he is on the leadership team for the Student Ambassador Program, the president of the SCU chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu (the Jesuit Honors Society), and serves in the Associated Student Government as a Senior Senator and Chair of the Current University Issues Committee. He interned for Franklin Templeton Investments in Hyderabad, India, during the Summer of 2017 and with the Brent Community Law Center in London, United Kingdom, during the Fall of 2017. After graduation, Eoin will be working in the Forensics and Risk Consulting group at KPMG in San Francisco, assisting with the prevention, discovery, and investigation of financial crimes.

Bella Rios
Isabella (Bella) Rios '19 is a Hackworth Fellow in Journalism Ethics with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. Her project entails working with The Santa Clara, SCU’s student newspaper, by writing case studies that delve into the complexity of prominent ethical dilemmas. Such topics include the paper’s responsibility to the University, coverage of sexual assault, and cultural sensitivity.

Bella is a Political Science and Spanish double major committed to creating a just and equitable world. During her college career, she’s reported for The Santa Clara and participated in Model United Nations. She’s held leadership roles in all Centers of Distinction: Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, Markkula Center and the Ignatian Center. This spring break she coordinated a student trip to the Arizona-Mexico border to learn about and directly witness the need for humane immigration policy. Upon graduation in June, she plans to apply for a Fulbright scholarship to conduct research on women’s economic empowerment in Peru.

 Beau Scott

Beau Scott ‘19 is a Hackworth Fellow in Government Ethics with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. He is currently working with BART Police and unhoused populations to author a report on homelessness in the Silicon Valley, reviewing the widespread dilemma from both ethical and practical lenses.

Beau is a Political Science major and Philosophy minor with strong passions for public service and social justice. While studying at Santa Clara University, he has participated in several opportunities that have allowed him to strengthen his skills in leadership, communication, and consensus-building. Examples include his participation in the Panetta Institute for Public Policy Congressional Internship Program in 2017, as well as the Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Program in 2018. Upon graduating from Santa Clara in June 2019, Beau will join the 72nd class of Coro Fellows in Public Affairs. Soon after Coro, he will return to academia for a Master’s in Public Policy from the Gerald R. Ford School at the University of Michigan.
