Getting Started

Create Job. Screen. Hire Student.

Create a job requisition to define the role and its requirements. Once the requisition is approved, begin the interview process to evaluate candidates. After selecting the best candidate, complete the hiring process and onboard the student into the position.

Below are the steps to get you started.

Step-by-step instructions on how to create a student employee job requisition are available on the Creating a Job Requisition User Guide, posted under the Manager Guides section on the Student Employment User Guides website.

Review and screen candidates by evaluating their applications, resumes, and qualifications to determine how well they meet the job requirements. Identify the most suitable applicants and contact the finalists to move forward in the selection process.

As part of the student employee recruiting process, hiring managers should conduct job interviews. Not all applicants need to be interviewed; only finalists should be invited for an interview. The job interview is an opportunity to assess the applicant's qualifications, skills, and overall fit for the position. Use this stage to ask deeper questions, compare their strengths, and evaluate how well they align with the role’s responsibilities and the organization’s needs before making the final hiring decision.

After selecting the candidate(s), extend a job offer, verbal job offer, outlining the position details, compensation, and start date. Communicate clearly with the chosen candidate, answer any questions they may have, and confirm their acceptance to finalize the hiring process.

Step-by-step instructions for initiating the hiring process in Workday are available in the Hire Student User Guide, posted under the Manager Guides section on the Student Employment User Guides website.

It's the hiring manager's responsibility to ensure the new student employee completes all required onboarding steps before the student starts working. Additionally, hiring managers are responsible for ensuring that their student employees complete their timesheets on time and accurately, in accordance with the University's established guidelines.
