Barbara Murray earned her B.A. in Theatre Arts in 1973 from Santa Clara University, and in 1976, received her M.F.A. in Theatre Design and Production from Southern Methodist University.

With over forty years of experience in Costume Design, Barbara designed costumes for Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Cabrillo Stage, Summer Repertory Theatre, Livermore Shakespeare Festival, Lyric Theatre, Opera San Jose, Children's Theatre Workshop, and Pear Avenue Theatre. She worked as a cutter/draper and crafts artisan for Milwaukee Repertory, the Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts, Lyric Theatre and Summer Repertory Theatre, and worked as the assistant Dyer/Painter in the San Francisco Opera costume shop.

Joining the Theatre & Dance faculty in 1978 as the Resident Costume Designer, Barbara designed or supervised student designers for Department productions. Barbara originated the Children's Theatre Program, which performed at various elementary schools around the Bay Area. She also served as the Program Director for the interdisciplinary Musical Theatre Minor.

She retired from SCU and was granted Emerita status in Spring 2022.
