Blair Hull : The World’s Greatest Investors : MoneyWeek

Alumnus Blair Hull MBA ’69 shares his story, as well as his experiences with, and advice about, investing wisely.

An article published in MoneyWeek features Blair Hull, who received his MBA from Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business in 1969. It shares his story, which includes time as a professional blackjack player, a seat on the Pacific Stock Exchange, founding of Hull Trading Company in 1985, and even time in politics.

In the piece, Hull provides plenty of insight for investors, and discusses some of the best investments he’s made:

“Hull made a series of very successful trades based on his reading of market sentiment, the best known of these being in the immediate aftermath of the October 1987 crash. While the market initially rallied, this quickly reversed, causing several exchanges to suspend trading on the main indices.

Sensing the panic was out of control, Hull aggressively started buying up futures in the MMI, one of the few indices still trading. This proved to be the bottom of the crisis, netting him millions when the market recovered. Hull also made money from a similar contrarian approach at the start of the Gulf war in 1990.”
