Artist's Statement

Original Pieces is a collection of acrylic and charcoal artworks that explores the vibrancy of everyday life by merging realism with abstraction. My work delves into the relationship between the organic and the artificial, capturing still lifes and landscapes with a focus on light and texture. An example of this approach is "Apple II," a still life created using unconventional tools, such as a palette knife instead of a brush, to emphasize texture and evoke the aesthetics of early technology.

A central piece in this collection, "95053," pays homage to the Mission Gardens at Santa Clara University, a space that has been a source of inspiration and reflection throughout my studies. This piece captures a moment shared with a peer, allowing me to look back on a meaningful experience within the SCU community.

My artistic process primarily involves acrylic on canvas, starting with an underpainting to establish a foundation, followed by layered applications of paint to build depth and detail. My art education at SCU, including Basic Painting with Prof. Ryan Reynolds and Life Drawing with Prof. Jess Eastburn, has deeply influenced my development as an artist and the works in Original Pieces. Their guidance has encouraged me to experiment with different techniques and narratives, pushing the boundaries of my work.

I aim for my art to promote a sense of connection within the SCU community and invite viewers to contemplate the details of everyday life through my still lifes. Looking ahead, I plan to further explore digital influences in my practice, aligning with my interest in brand identity and my aspirations in digital marketing.
