This exhibit is curated by Professor Kelly Detweiler whose relationship with artists of Hokkaido has covered thirty five years and included multiple exhibits and exchanges in Japan and in the US.

In “Parallel Visions” there will be five artists from Hokkaido paired with five faculty members from Santa Clara University.This exhibition is intended to encourage dialogue between the artists and relationships/differences between their work.

Both Hokkaido and California occupy unique positions within their respective national cultures. Hokkaido, as Japan's northernmost island, developed its modern artistic identity later than the traditional cultural centers of Kyoto and Tokyo, fostering a distinct artistic sensibility shaped by its frontier history, indigenous Ainu heritage, and relationship to landscape. Similarly, California, and specifically the Bay Area, has cultivated artistic movements that challenge East Coast conventions while drawing on Pacific Rim influences.

The "Parallel Visions" exhibit examines how artists working in these two regions navigate questions of regional versus national identity, tradition versus innovation, and local versus global artistic discourse. This exhibition investigates how geographic and cultural specificity informs artistic practice while acknowledging the increasing interconnectedness of contemporary art worlds.
