Dr. John B. Drahmann Advising Award

In recognition of having established among colleagues and students a well-deserved reputation for extraordinary dedication to student welfare through wise, informed, effective, and caring counsel, and having demonstrated the ability to motivate other teachers and learners.

Since joining Santa Clara University in 2015, Cara Chiaraluce (Sociology) has advised students throughout their undergraduate experience, helping first-year students find their footing and supporting seniors as they prepare for life after graduation. Colleagues describe her counsel as thoughtful, informed, and encouraging, especially when students are unsure what comes next.

As the primary instructor for the Sociology Department’s Internship course, Chiaraluce builds career support around students’ interests. At the start of each course, she surveys students about their goals and areas of interest, then uses their responses to shape course materials and invite relevant guest speakers and alumni. She also connects students with external career counselors and SCU’s Career Center, helping them turn broad plans into concrete next steps.

Students have praised the course’s practical support. One student highlighted the value of hearing from alumni and being required to make an appointment with the Career Center, saying the appointment helped students feel accountable for taking action. By combining advice, alumni perspectives, and direct connections to campus resources, Chiaraluce helps students prepare for the transition from college to their careers.

Her advising work extends beyond the Sociology Department. Chiaraluce developed an advising Camino course and resources for faculty and students across the University.

Her expertise has also earned national recognition: the American Sociological Association has invited her to share career-advising strategies with faculty and staff at other institutions.

With attentive guidance and practical approach, Chiaraluce helps students see possibilities for life after graduation and take steps toward them.

Congratulations to Cara Chiaraluce, winner of the 2026 Dr. John B. Drahmann Advising Award!
