As part of the sociology curriculum, all students will have the opportunity to participate in a sociology related internship. Internships give students the opportunity to work and conduct studies in an array of different fields to gain knowledge about their passions outside of the classroom. Students will be able to experience first-hand what it means to work and collaborate in the real world, while connecting this to the material being taught in their classes. This professional experience gives students an ability to experiment with what could possibly come after graduating with a sociology degree, as well as prepare for diverse professional post-graduate paths.
Student Awards and Honors
The Sociology Department awards several distinct honors to its majors in recognition of their scholarship and service. Sociology juniors and seniors with exemplary academic records are invited to join the academic honor society Alpha Kappa Delta. Seniors are eligible for three different awards: the Witold Krassowski Sociology Award for a research paper; the Sociology Alumni Service Award for an exemplary record of service; and the Sociology Academic Excellence Award.
Silicon Valley Sociological Review
The Sociology Department publishes the Silicon Valley Sociological Review, an annual research journal, to showcase distinguished papers from students. Through the journal, students have an opportunity to experience how academic publishing works in addition to demonstrating their research skills. Read the current and past volumes here.
The Annual Undergraduate Research Conference
This annual event, with the generous support of our alumni, facilitates communication and professional exchange among students and faculty from colleges and universities throughout the Western United States. To do so, each year faculty and students from the Anthropology and Sociology Departments participate in this much anticipated event that welcomes undergraduates and their advisors to our campus.
