Field Education at JST-SCU

Field Education at JST-SCU

Field Education is an integral part of the Master of Divinity and Bachelor of Sacred Theology programs at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University, offering students supervised pastoral ministry experience in the San Francisco Bay Area and structured opportunities for theological reflection grounded in Ignatian spirituality.

M.Div. and S.T.B. Field Placements and Pastoral Ministry

Through three semesters of supervised ministry starting in the spring of the first year, students serve across a rich network of Bay Area parishes, schools, universities, prisons, healthcare settings, and nonprofit organizations. This immersive experience empowers students to:

  • Cultivate their evolving ministerial identities and hone pastoral skills.
  • Practice collaborative, synodal leadership styles.
  • Encounter complex pastoral and social realities in varied community settings.

Integrating Action and Reflection

Engaging in regular theological reflection groups and receiving mentorship from supervisors, students ground academic study in real-world pastoral practice. Intentional integration of experience, reflection, and action, grounded in Ignatian spirituality, forms a foundation for effective leadership in today's synodal Church.

For details of the Field Education Program and degree requirements, please see the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) Handbook, the Bachelor of Sacred Theology (S.T.B.) Handbook, and the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) Field Education Handbook.

For questions about field education, please reach out to the Director of Ministerial Formation, Deborah Ross.

Teaching confirmation taught me to trust the slow work of God and to recognize Christ’s presence in moments that seemed ordinary at first glance. I leave this experience with deep gratitude, knowing that the students formed me just as much as I hoped to form them.
