Housing Accommodations

The Office of Accessible Education (OAE) provides reasonable accommodations in housing for students with disabilities who live on campus. Each student’s needs are determined on an individualized, case-by-case basis. These accommodations are made on the basis of availability, and must be made as far in advance as possible or upon onset of disability.

To provide needed housing accommodations OAE works in coordination with the JST-SCU Housing Office. OAE’s role is to determine the specific housing a student requires based on their documented disability. Housing assignments/placements are exclusively made by the JST-SCU Housing Office.

OAE reviews documentation and processes accommodations requests throughout the academic year. To ensure timely processing of requests and implementation of accommodations for the fall semester, we recommend all new students submit an application and upload documentation by May 15. We are only able to confirm accommodations after completing a thorough review of the submitted application, uploaded documentation, and information gathered during the interactive interview. Applications are reviewed in the order they are received.

For more information about general housing please visit JST-SCU Housing.

All first-year JST-SCU students requesting housing accommodation due to their disability or documented medical condition, should register with OAE as soon as possible as timely notice is needed to coordinate accommodations.

For more information about general housing please visit JST-SCU Housing.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The JST-SCU Housing Office, based on the prescribed accommodation, will assign you to a housing residence; OAE is not involved in the selection of your housing unit. Please note, housing accommodations may become void if the selected housing preferences on your JST-SCU housing application contradict the nature of the approved housing accommodation(s) and/or if you apply for housing as part of a group. A group is defined as a student requesting to live with one or more room/suite mates.

Students living on campus and who have a newly-diagnosed condition or changes to a previously-documented condition may request housing accommodations or reassignment to another type of room or residence. New housing accommodations or reassignments are made on a space-available basis and only for the student whose disability needs change.

Newly diagnosed students must request housing accommodations by registering with the Office of Accessible Education (OAE).

Students with housing accommodations in place requesting reassignment should contact OAE as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. Students will be required to provide updated documentation.

The Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University is committed to ensuring that students with disabilities are afforded equal access to the JST-SCU’s educational programs and activities. In furtherance of this commitment, the Service Animal and Assistance Animal Policies in JST-SCU housing set forth the guidelines for the use of Service and Assistance Animals by students in JST-SCU-operated housing.

The Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University has a no-pet policy in student housing. In accordance with federal and state laws, students with disabilities have a right to request an exception to this policy through the Office of Accessible Education (OAE). Students who would like to request an exception must register with OAE.

All reasonable efforts must be made to make the request in advance of arrival on campus. Failure to do so may result in a delay of accommodations and/or preclude the use of the Assistance Animal in JST-SCU Housing.

Students can request to have an Assistance Animal in housing at any time during the year. However, in order to ensure the availability of appropriate housing for students with Assistance Animals, students should contact OAE in advance of the following dates:

JST-SCU

Fall Semester: June 1

Spring Semester: November 1

If the request for an Assistance Animal is approved by OAE, the student will meet with a representative of the JST-SCU Housing Office to determine the most appropriate housing.

In some instances, roommates or suitemates may be required to sign a Roommate/Suitemate Acknowledgment provided by JST-SCU Housing. The JST-SCU Housing Office may relocate the Owner and/or other resident students as necessary.
