Sociology Club highlights what events they've hosted throughout the winter and spring quarters

As the spring rolled around, we planned a few events centered around the theme of intersectionality in our everyday lives. We had high hopes in collaborating with our various multicultural associations and clubs here on campus. Beginning with the African Student Association (ASA), a sociological discussion involving diaspora and the role of food in identity was paired with a live cooking demonstration to create what was called “Food at the Root”. This event worked to introduce new ways of thinking to those who are not familiar with utilizing sociological imagination and allowed us to take part in sharing traditional dishes made by Shakira Asunción Perez and Gloria Karekezi from ASA. This Food at the Roots event was the beginning of what we hope will become the first of many introspective-based meals and collaborations with other different cultural clubs through the MCC.

Continuing on with our collaborations, we recently worked together with SCU’s Barkada and Together for Ladies of Color (TLC) to create a wonderful event titled “Tea time: Brown Women and the Model Minority Myth”. At this event, we enjoyed some in-depth discussions and self reflection about how intersectionality affects women of color in our society while sipping on some tea. In addition, we dedicated time to create social justice posters to help promote the use of our powerful opinions and voices on any other social issues we may feel passionate about.

This year has been great in sharing our sociological perspectives with a number of other impactful clubs and we plan on ending the year with a celebration of everyone’s hard work and dedication with an End of the Year party. This will be a great opportunity for sociology students to get to know our great faculty members in a more casual setting while also rewarding themselves for their efforts in making it through the school year. We also hope to celebrate the work done by our fellow board members, Isa Fernandez, Kathryn Yambao, and Alex Zabalza, as all these events and collaborations would not be possible without their commitment to the club. With that, we hope that you check back in the future for more updates on our club’s activities and events next year.
